The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
